Best Women's Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

If you are a lady who suffers from Plantar Fasciitis, then I have no need to tell you how painful that is. No-one likes to endure any type of walking pains, but heel and lower foot pain can be really very annoying. The name "plantar fasciitis," refers to a ligament that connects the bone in your heel, to your toes. In addition it also supports the natural arch in your foot.

Damage that ligament in any way and your foot will hurt, when you stand or walk. It is usually the most painful when you first stand up, having sat down for a while, or first thing in the morning, or after a long car journey. If you have any of these symptoms then chances are you have plantar fasciitis.

Quick Navigation

Suggested Treatments for Plantar Fasciitis

The recommended treatments are to try and rest, though for busy women that is much easier said than done. It is also suggested that you should not walk or run on hard surfaces, but let's be honest we live in a world filled with pavements and roads. It is pretty hard to avoid walking on those, or on hard floors at work. So although the advice is sound enough, it is in my opinion not that practical, as we all have lives to lead, and things to get done.

Toe Stretches

This tip does help, and actually does work if you take the time to do it. First thing in the morning try to gently stretch the toes, and also the calf muscles. The calf muscle is the muscle on the back of your leg, just in case you were like me, and thought it was somewhere else.

You can do this by placing a towel, or something similar under the ball of your foot, and then gently pull up on both ends of the towel. Start slowly and then gently increase the pull to help loosen up and "stretch" the ligaments and muscles.

Get A New Pair of Shoes

The other treatment suggested is to get a new pair of shoes. Alternatively you can try out heel cups or shoe inserts if you prefer to keep your old shoes. I don't know about you, but new shoes of any kind always work for me. However one thing I would say, that if you are already in severe pain with this, forget buying shoes for now and go and see your doctor.

Shoes can help alleviate pain, and studies* show that they have helped 14-15% of people get better, from this pain. The good news was that most patients can recover from this pain. However some may eventually require surgery as the only solution. That risk of surgery was higher for those who went for prolonged periods of pain, without seeking treatment. This high risk also applied to those who were considerably overweight, or anyone suffering from bilateral symptoms.

So wearing the right shoes can certainly make a difference. So can keeping a close watch on your weight, and also going to the doctor if the pain continues or gets worse. It is estimated that around 20% of the UK population ** suffers from Plantar Facsiitis, so no small problem to deal with.

Best Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

I am not going to bore you with long lists of the top 10 shoes. I did a lot of research to try and find the very best information that I could. I also know that we like to have a few options so I have also looked at that. Based on those two criteria, I have picked out a few pairs, that deal with bringing relief to sufferers, but with an eye on them looking good as well.

I have selected what I think are the top 5 choices for work shoes, casual walking shoes, sandals and even slippers.

Good shoes should reinforce the arch in the foot

Good shoes should keep your feet aligned

Ideally you want to buy well made shoes, that absorb shock, make your feet feel stable and by doing so, give your body a really nice posture. If you are also a lady who needs to be on her feet all day, then the shoes need to be very comfortable, hard wearing and allow your feet to breathe.

The sole should be tough and fairly rigid, with a low heel that offers great arch support. That style of women's shoe also helps alleviate the pressure on the Achilles' heel and also on the plantar ligament. Ideally there should also be good cushioning as that brings comfort, but acts as a strong shock absorber, when the the feet hit the ground.

I also want to get rid of a common shoe myth. Good shoes do not need to be broken in. I have heard that so many times and it is simply not true. Good shoes should fit properly and feel comfortable right out of the box. Boots may need a little breaking in, especially tougher boots like hiking boots, or trekking boots, but not a normal pair of shoes.

Best Work Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

There are a very wide range of casual or sneaker style shoes that help a lot with people suffering from various foot related problems. However it is quite difficult to find shoes, that are suitable for work environments. Now women do work in a whole range of jobs, and in many of those, they can wear more casual shoes.

The sections below show sneakers, casual and sandal type options. However I wanted this section to include shoes that would be acceptable for those who work in an office, or in a customer facing environment. These were really hard to find, but I did manage to come up with some very good choices in the end.

No 1 Choice - Clarks Women’s Un Loop Loafers

Most ladies will be familiar with the Clarks brand. I know growing up that my own Mum insisted that to look after my feet "properly" that I had to be bought Clarks shoes. Well buyers rate this first choice very highly when it comes to wearing work shoes.

They are available in most UK sizes and are available in two slightly different colours of black. There is a matt style and a more shiny leather style.

Best Walking Casual Shoes for Women

In this section of the article, we wanted to include those shoes for casual wear, for those who want something comfortable for walking and for taking on holiday.

We have included our top 5 picks for these, and there are certainly plenty of choices in this category.

No 1 Choice - Skechers Gowalk 2 Super Sock Women's Walking Shoes

Don't let the name put you off as I know it says walking shoes. It does not mean that these are only for women who walk to keep fit, or anything like that. These shoes from the really good Skecher brand have quite literally sold in their thousands.

  • Available In Sizes 2-8 including 1/2 sizes
  • Available in 11 colours
  • Flat Heel - 1.5" high

These are very light to wear and many buyers describe these as "walking on clouds." You can also wash these and that means you can wear them every day, and simply wash them as and when you need to.

Buyers have given these a huge vote of success as you can see from a 94% buyer satisfaction rate. These are certainly not cheap shoes, but my advice is that if you can afford them, then just try them out.

Around 75% of buyers said they took the same size in these as their normal shoes, and the other 25% said they had to take a size smaller, as they found them a little bigger, than their normal shoe.

These are not shoes for running, but they are suitable for walking and for normal day to day wear.

No 2 Choice - Orthaheel Walker Women's Plantar Fasciitis Shoe

Now as the name would very clearly suggest, these are designed specifically for those ladies suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. Although these are fantastic shoes, the big downside is the price. At close to £200, sadly many ladies will not be able to afford these, or justify the spend. They have again sold in their thousands, but far from an affordable option.

  • Leather Upper that is water resistant
  • Lace up shoes
  • Flat Heel - 2" high

Buyer Satisfaction

These are an ideal solution for women who are on their feet all day. Many of the buyers were factory workers and nurses who spent 12 hours and more a day on their feet. That should tell you a lot.

These do have a hard sole and some buyers did not like that, hence the lower rating than the one above. That said, a hard inflexible sole is exactly what you want when suffering from plantar fasciitis.

The price point is high and no question about that. The fact that they have sold a lot does tell me that people are prepared to pay a lot of money, to deal with this annoying pain.

One buyer said this, "So anyway, I got them, tried them on, went for a walk, and it was like angels singing."

No 3 Choice - Skechers Women’s Go Walk 3 Low-Top Sneakers

These sneakers have sold a lot, and many women have picked these as their first choice. Mainly that is down to the memory foam padded heel cup, which allows them to walk very comfortably.

  • These are slip on sneakers
  • Available in a wide variety of colours that includes black, beige, hot pink, black/white, grey, charcoal, blue, turquoise, and purple

Many ladies buy these for going on holiday, where they may be doing even more walking than usual. The ladies all stated that they are like walking on air, and that the colour choice is excellent.

Buyers have given these a huge vote of success as you can see from a 92% buyer satisfaction rate. The only real complaints that buyers make is of course the price, and they are not cheap, but they are high quality.

A lot of buyers said that these offered more support than other trainers. I did laugh when one buyer said that it was like walking with 2 pillows on your feet. Not quite the analogy that I would use, but I do understand her meaning.

No 4 Choice - Vionic Fyn Trainer

These trainers are designed to help over pronation, and they also are wide fitting. They are  a lace up shoe with a very flat heel.

  • Outer material is a stretch easy to clean textile
  • The sole is made from gum rubber

Vioic highly recommend a breaking in period for these trainers, as they do take a little bit of getting used to. That is because these are designed for those who tend to over pronate when walking. They recommend a few hours per day for the first 1-2 weeks.

Buyers have rated these with an 84% buyer satisfaction rate. The trainers are about the mid price-point range for this type of supportive trainer.

They will seem tight when you first get them, and that is why the manufacturer recommends this 1-2 week breaking in period. Don't worry they will loosen and ease up after a couple of weeks.

They are comfortable and well made so will last for a long time. The most important thing is they do provide a lot of support, and that is the main reason for buying these.

Vionic make a lot of supportive shoes for sufferers of Plantar Fasciitis and this is their reach into trainer or sneaker territory.

No 5 Choice - Vionic Women’s Kona Fitness Shoes

These are slightly more expensive than the Vionic trainers above, bu they also do get higher buyer ratings. It may well be worthwhile to pay the extra few pounds simply because they do have better ratings. They are available in the black/pink shown below but also in a grey/yellow trim if you prefer that look.

The mid sole on these adds a lot of stability, and that along with the rubber tread, makes these feel very safe and comfortable to walk in. The uppers are made from a mixture of faux leather and a mesh.

These do attract a 94% buyer satisfaction rate which is very impressive for any pair of trainers. 86% of buyers gave these the full 5 star review treatment, so clearly buyers love these.

One buyer simply said this, " I suffer from plantar fasciitis and these are perfect trainers."

Buyers stated that these had a lot of toe room, great support and they stay cool in the summer thanks to the mesh. Buyers also said that there is no need to break these in, and you can wear them with ease from the very first day that you get them.
