How We Do Our Hiking Shoes Reviews?
We started by creating a long list of hiking shoes that sell well and get consistently good online buyer reviews. Then we narrowed that list down, and included only those shoes that got very high buyer ratings. We ended up with 12 pairs of shoes that we think are worth your consideration.
On our top 12 list of hiking and trekking shoes we then did a ton of research. We looked at the most popular shoes, those that sold the most, and then rated those by the buyer satisfaction scores that women left. That was after they had bought the shoes, hiked in them and then took the time to leave a review.
Once we had that long task completed, we then put together our list, which you can find below.
Hiking/Trekking Shoes vs Hiking/Trekking Boots
One question that we think needs to be answered is whether to buy hiking shoes or hiking boots? That is a difficult question to answer. The one thing that we can be certain of is that if you plan on walking or trekking, then at least you know that specialised footwear is required.
There is no point whatsoever in using ordinary sneakers or trainers for hikes and walks, especially where the terrain is rough. Those are perfectly fine for people who simply like to walk, or for ordinary everyday use. Just bear in mind that some people who go for long walks class those as a hike, even if it is on flat terrain.
The hiking footwear choices available for hiking and trekking are:
- Hiking sandals - designed for warmer climates
- Hiking Shoes - which we cover in this article
- Trail Running Shoes - quite a specific design for this type of activity
- Mid Weight Hiking Boots
- Heavy Hiking Boots
So as you can see there are at least 5 possible choices available to the hiker. If we rule out trail running shoes and sandals for hiking in the UK, then the choice is really shoes, mid weight boots or heavier boots. In this article we focus extensively on the best hiking or trekking shoes for women.

Hiking/Trekking Shoes for Women Buying Guide
We know that for most women, when it comes to buying a pair of hiking shoes, they will want to own a good quality pair of shoes that represent good value for money. They will also expect their shoes to be durable enough to last for a long time.
When those very basic requirements have been met, then it is the smaller things that make the difference in which shoes that you prefer. Those include features like which brand of shoe, the appearance of the shoe, the weight and comfort, and other features such was being waterproof, breathable and supportive.
We shall cover these features in more detail just below.
What Kind of Shoes are Best for Hiking?
As we mentioned earlier feet come in many shapes and sizes. Picking shoes though should really follow a simple process. We highly recommend trying on at least 3-5 pairs of shoes, and not rushing the process. Different brands make slightly different sizes in terms of length and width.
We are sure you have come across this when shopping for any pair of shoes, and walking shoes are no different to those typical other styles of shoes.
The only additional thing you have to focus on is that when walking at a brisk pace, your walking shoes should help encourage that type of walking, and help support and protect the feet. You want to make sure that any pair of walking shoes you buy achieves these three vital characteristics:
- Shock absorption
- Arch Support
The reason these three characteristics are important is because walking is considered to be a medium impact type of exercise. Running, netball, and hockey for example are classed as high impact as they are pretty tough on the knee joints, the ankle joints and the feet.
Hiking and trekking also uses all of these joints but the impact with the ground is not as severe. Nevertheless when going for a hike, you want to minimise the impact on your joints and also on your feet.
We recommend avoiding shoes that are advertised in a misleading way such as lightweight, airy or minimal. Shoes of that nature offer little to no support for the feet and ankles and should be avoided at all costs.
Although we have included some slip on shoes on our list, we prefer the lace up time for more strenuous or longer hikes.
Best Hiking Shoes Brands
There are a number of hiking shoe brands, and some are more popular than others. The key brands are:
- Karrimor Bodmin
- Northwest Territory
Best Winter Hiking Shoes
Hiking in the winter is good for us in so many ways. That said, we would always recommend hiking boots rather than hiking shoes during winter periods. The reason we say that is that they have better treads, and also protect and support the ankles better.
Boots will also keep your feet a little bit warmer than shoes in the cold. You can check our top 10 list of hiking boots by clicking here.
